These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the CheckMate mobile application (the "App," "CheckMate," "we," "us," or "our"). By downloading, accessing, or using CheckMate, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to create a CheckMate account. When you create an account, you agree to provide accurate information and to keep it up to date. You are responsible for safeguarding access to your account, including any device on which you remain signed in, and for all activity that occurs under it.
CheckMate allows people to view a bill, claim items, and mark their share as paid without creating an account ("Guest Users"), by way of an invite link or QR code shared by an account holder. By participating as a Guest User, you agree to these Terms to the extent they apply to your use of the App, even without a registered account. Access as a Guest User is tied to a session on your device and is not guaranteed to persist indefinitely; creating a free account is required for durable, cross-device access to your bill history.

CheckMate is a tool for tracking and coordinating shared expenses. You are solely responsible for the accuracy of the bills, splits, and payment statuses you enter, and for actually sending and receiving payment through your chosen payment method. Disputes between you and another user about who owes what, or whether a payment was actually made, are between you and that user — CheckMate is not a party to those transactions and does not arbitrate payment disputes.
CheckMate does not process, hold, or transmit funds. When you choose to pay or request payment, CheckMate opens a third-party application — such as Venmo, Zelle, or Apple Pay — via a deep link, and the actual transaction occurs entirely within that third-party service, subject to its own terms and policies. CheckMate is not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or performance of any third-party payment service, or for any loss arising from your use of one.
CheckMate, including its design, branding, logos, and underlying software, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App for your personal, non-commercial use, subject to these Terms. You retain ownership of any content you upload (such as receipt photos), and you grant us a limited license to store, process, and display that content solely to provide the App's functionality to you and the people you share a bill with.
CheckMate is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that receipt scanning will always be accurate, that the App will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any particular payment reminder or deep link will function as expected on every device or with every third-party app version.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, CheckMate and its officers, employees, and affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of money, goodwill, or data, arising from or related to your use of the App — including, without limitation, any dispute over a bill split, a failed or disputed third-party payment, or reliance on receipt-scanning results. In no event will our total liability to you for all claims exceed the greater of $50 or the amount, if any, you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim.
You may stop using CheckMate and delete your account at any time by contacting support. We may suspend or terminate your access to the App, with or without notice, if we believe you have violated these Terms, engaged in fraudulent or abusive behavior, or for any other reason at our discretion, including discontinuing the App entirely. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including Sections 6, 7, 8, and 10) will survive.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of CheckMate will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Massachusetts, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by email before the changes take effect. Continuing to use CheckMate after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
