Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 8, 2026  ·  Last updated: July 8, 2026

CheckMate ("CheckMate," "we," "us," or "our") builds a mobile application that helps people split restaurant bills and other shared expenses. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the CheckMate app (the "App"), how we use and protect it, and the choices you have. By using CheckMate, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.

The short version: we collect what we need to split bills, track who's paid, and let you invite friends — and nothing more. CheckMate never processes your payments directly; you settle up through Venmo, Zelle, or Apple Pay, and we never see your financial account credentials.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information you provide directly

  • Account information: name, email address, and (optionally) a profile photo, Venmo username, and phone number, when you create an account.
  • Friend connections: the friends you add within the app, and the identifiers (such as phone number or username) you use to find and invite them.
  • Bill and receipt data: receipt images you scan or upload, restaurant names, itemized purchases, prices, dates, and how a bill is split among participants.
  • Payment tracking information: who has been marked as paid or pending for a given bill, and which third-party payment method (Venmo, Zelle, or Apple Pay) was used — not the payment itself.
  • Guest participant information: when someone joins a bill without creating an account, we collect the name they enter and a session identifier so they can view and settle their share.
  • Communications: anything you send us directly, such as support requests, bug reports, or feature suggestions.

1.2 Information collected automatically

  • Device identifiers: a unique device or installation identifier, device model, and operating system version, used to keep your session secure and diagnose issues.
  • Analytics data: how you use the App — such as which features are opened and how often — used in aggregate to improve the product.
  • Crash reports: diagnostic logs generated automatically if the App crashes or encounters an error, used solely to identify and fix bugs.

CheckMate does not collect precise GPS location, and does not access your photo library or contacts except when you explicitly choose to scan a receipt, import a photo, or invite a contact — each of which triggers a native iOS permission prompt that you can decline without losing access to the rest of the App.

2. How We Use Information

We use the information above to:

  • Create and maintain your account, and authenticate you when you sign in.
  • Extract itemized data from receipt photos so bills can be split automatically.
  • Let you create, join, and split bills with friends and guests.
  • Track payment status and running balances between you and your friends.
  • Send reminders about outstanding balances, at your request or by default setting.
  • Generate the deep links that open Venmo, Zelle, or Apple Pay with the correct amount pre-filled.
  • Diagnose crashes, fix bugs, and understand which features are useful so we can improve them.
  • Respond to support requests, bug reports, and feature suggestions.
  • Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your receipt contents or bill data to serve you third-party advertising.

3. Third-Party Services

CheckMate relies on a small number of third-party services to operate. Each only receives the information necessary to perform its function:

  • Payment apps (Venmo, Zelle, Apple Pay): CheckMate does not process payments. When you choose to pay or request money, CheckMate opens the relevant app via a deep link with the amount and recipient pre-filled. CheckMate never receives your payment credentials, bank details, or transaction confirmation from these services — you complete the payment entirely within their app, subject to their own privacy policies.
  • Sign in with Apple / Google: if you choose to sign in this way, Apple or Google shares your name and email (or a private relay email, at your choice) with us to create your account.
  • Cloud hosting and infrastructure: our backend services and database, which store your account, bill, and receipt data securely.
  • Analytics and crash reporting providers: used to understand feature usage and automatically diagnose app crashes, as described in Section 1.2.
  • SMS and email delivery providers: used to send invite links, payment reminders, and account verification messages you request.

We require all third-party service providers to protect your information consistently with this Privacy Policy and to use it only for the purposes we specify.

4. Analytics

We use analytics tools to understand, in aggregate, how people use CheckMate — for example, which features are used most, where people encounter friction, and whether a new release introduces problems. Analytics data is tied to a device or account identifier, not to the contents of your receipts or bills, and is used only to improve the App.

5. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your information, including encryption of data in transit, access controls on our infrastructure, and hashed storage of sensitive tokens (such as guest access tokens). No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so while we work hard to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account and bill data for as long as your account is active, so that your bill history and running balances remain accurate. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain certain records for legal, tax, fraud-prevention, or dispute- resolution purposes. Guest session data is retained only as long as needed to support the bill the guest joined, and is deleted on a rolling basis thereafter.

7. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate information (most of this you can edit directly in the app, under Account).
  • Request deletion of your account and associated personal information.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing of your information.
  • Request a copy of your information in a portable format.
  • Withdraw consent for optional features (such as notifications or contacts access) at any time via your device settings.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@checkmatesplit.app. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

8. Children's Privacy

CheckMate is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will promptly delete it.

9. International Users

CheckMate is operated from the United States. If you use the App from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate, which may have different data protection laws than your home country. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by email before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the most current version.
